Polish car manufacturer

Izera – a Polish manufacturer of electric cars based in Warsaw, operating since 2020. The brand belongs to the Polish company ElectroMobility Poland.

Origins
On October 19, 2016, the establishment of the ElectroMobility Poland joint-stock company was inaugurated, the purpose of which was to build electric cars of Polish production and construction. The initiative was supported by state-owned energy companies Energa, Enea, Tauron and PGE, as well as the National Center for Nuclear Research [1]. Less than a year later, on September 12, 2017, four winning designs for the potential appearance of future vehicles produced by the company were selected [2], while in March 2019 it was announced that the construction work on the first vehicles would take another 40 months [3]. In September of the same year, the planned date of commencement of production of Polish electric cars for 2022 or 2023 was announced [4].

In February 2020, the president of ElectroMobility Poland, Piotr Zaremba, indicated that work on virtual prototypes was completed [5], while on June 26 of the same year, the official premiere of both the first two prototypes, as well as the logo and brand of Polish electric cars [6] was announced.

Izera
The official presentation of the Izera brand took place on July 28, 2020 during the conference, which was broadcast on the Internet on Facebook [7]. The presentation included both the presentation of a previously unknown company name and logo, as well as two pre-production prototypes of electric cars [8] [9].

The brand name comes from the Jizera – a river flowing through Poland and the Czech Republic, one of the tributaries of the Elbe. The company’s representatives also emphasized that the chosen name is easy to remember and pronounce also for people from outside Poland, because in the future the company plans to sell not only on the domestic market, but also on foreign markets [8].

The brand’s advertising slogan is “A million reasons to go further” [8]. The Izera logo consists of two parts: in the middle there is a stylized compass needle, which is to mean that the brand is following its own path, consistently pursuing its goals and setting new directions. There is a hexagon from the outside, which is to emphasize modern technologies and engineering craftsmanship. The hexagon has been divided into two parts to resemble the arms surrounding the sign, which is to signify care and safety [10].

The German company EDAG Engineering became the technical integrator of the brand’s cars. The Italian studio Torino Design is responsible for the appearance of the new cars, and the project consultant is Tadeusz Jelec, a long-time designer of the Jaguar brand. The president of the company responsible for Izera is Piotr Zaremba, previously, inter alia, project manager for electromobility at the Ministry of Energy and chief specialist in the department of innovation and industrial development at the Ministry of Economy [9].

At the time of the presentation of the Izera brand in July 2019, the topic of the future factory was also discussed – it was indicated that it would be built in the Śląskie Voivodeship – initially indicating Jaworzno, unofficially also Ruda Śląska [11] – and its launch is to create approx. 3,000 additional jobs (and approx. 15,000 for sub-suppliers [12]). The creation of the factory and production lines was then planned for 2021 [13], while serial production was to start in the third quarter of 2023 [14]. In the first year of production, 60,000 cars are to be produced, with time this number is expected to rise to 100,000 units per year [15].

Until the presentation of the prototype models, ElectroMobility Poland had allocated approximately PLN 35 million to development activities to date. The costs of building a factory, introducing the first vehicles to production and selling, as well as promotion or service, are estimated at PLN 5 billion [16]. ElectroMobility Poland intends to distribute cars without a dealer network [15], following the example of Tesla Inc.

First Vehicles
The first two Izera cars were named T100 and Z100. The T100 is a compact hatchback in driving, pre-production form with a ready-made passenger compartment and drivetrain design, while the Z100 is a similar-sized SUV, which at the time of presentation was only a clay shell heralding the shape of the body of the future vehicle [17].

The manufacturer announces that its vehicles will be affordable. The cost of purchasing the Izera car is to be lower than that of a traditional car with an internal combustion engine [18]. The long wheelbase in both models is to ensure adequate spaciousness of the rear row of seats, while the passenger compartment itself has been equipped with functionalities such as: handles for children, an induction charger or 4 ISOFIX mountings [19]. During the presentation, the manufacturer indicated that in addition to the usual cash purchase, an installment plan will also be available in order to keep the total cost of the car at a level more attractive than combustion cars of a comparable class [8].

The equipment of Izera vehicles will also include: a heated steering wheel with programmable buttons, an adjustable energy recuperation mode, two color displays, including one touchscreen located centrally on the dashboard, virtual indicators with the possibility of personalization, as well as automatic air conditioning [19]. When it comes to safety systems, cars are to be equipped with, among others, in: ESC (stabilization system), FCW (collision warning system), BSW (blind spot detection system) and TSR (road sign detection system) [20]. Equipped with a number of driver assistance systems, the Izera cars are to provide automation on the second level (ADAS Level 2), which under certain conditions means the possibility of simultaneous speed and track control [21].

Development plans
At the time of the presentation, ElectroMobility Poland did not indicate the detailed technical parameters of the vehicles, indicating only the planned battery capacity: 40 or 60 kWh [21], as well as the range (approx. 400 km), acceleration to 100 km / h (less than 8 seconds), and also a maximum speed of approximately 160 km / h [8]. Elements such as the platform, battery pack or engines are to be provided by a foreign supplier, along with licenses allowing for the modification of elements. At the time of Izera’s premiere, the manufacturer revealed that it is able to negotiate with two potential suppliers of technical components. Ultimately, up to 60% of car parts are to be domestically produced [14].

The company’s representatives are satisfied with the achieved cost level, which is to keep the assumed price level of cars [22]. In the following years of operation on the Izera market, its offer is to be expanded by new vehicles, the number of which is to reach 5 different designs [23].

Factory
In mid-December 2020, the president of ElectroMobility Poland announced that in the third quarter of 2021, the construction of the first Izera car production plants will begin, the location of which is Jaworzno in the Silesian Voivodeship. The construction is to take about 2 years, allowing for the commencement of serial production of vehicles later than originally planned – not in the third quarter of 2023, but in the first quarter of 2024 [24].

At the beginning of August 2021, the State Treasury signed an agreement with its parent company towards Izera, ElectroMobility Poland, recapitalizing the company’s shares in the amount of PLN 250 million. The transaction is to facilitate preparatory work related to the construction of the Izera factory in Jaworzno [25].
