Ioniq (stylized as IONIQ) is a South Korean automotive brand and division of Hyundai Motor Company. The marque was established in 2020 as a sub-brand for Hyundai electric vehicle line-up.[1] The sub-brand is slated to aid Hyundai to achieve a targeted 1 million electric vehicle annual sales by 2025, which the Ioniq brand is projected to contribute 560,000 of those sales.[2]

Prior to its introduction as a sub-brand, the name Ioniq has already been used by Hyundai for a project dedicated to ecological mobility,[3] and since 2016 the name has been used for an eco-friendly compact liftback, the Hyundai Ioniq, which is available in gasoline hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full electric.[4]

On 10 August 2020, the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group announced the launching of a new automotive brand called Ioniq (a portmanteau of “ion” and “unique”) in London, reserved for electric cars.[5][6] At the launch, the manufacturer revealed its plans to produce electric vehicles named 5, 6 and 7 and based on the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP common electric car platform presented at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
